Character's Full Name: Gwen Cooper
Canon Torchwood
PB/Actor: Eve Myles
Character's Starting Level: 8
Character Age: 34

Physical Description: Gwen leans towards darker colours, denim jeans and black leather jacket a regular part of her wardrobe. Her look is no mess no fuss with a slight edge to it. She has a decent sized gap between her two front teeth that wouldn't look right if she were to fix it. Her dark brown, almost black hair is worn past her shoulders with her fringe cut to above her eyes. She keeps herself neat and presentable but isn't exactly a girly-girl. Make-up is kept to a minimum, barely enough to cover her smattering of freckles and dresses, well there may be a few in her wardrobe but they rarely see the light of day. Though far from overweight, she does have some meat on her bones and actually looks healthy as opposed to anorexic.

Character's Species/Race (aka human, elf, dragonblood human, etc): Human

Character History (Pre-Veil): Nifty Wiki Link

Post Veil History: Gwen came through the veil, some five years ago now. She fell into what she knew, working with the Police in Cardiff but was slowly going mad with the boredom of it all. She encountered the Knights in her first year this side of the veil, assigned to liaise with a team from The Karthur Institute when they came out to investigate a case. Through this encounter, she learned about who was really behind the Karthur Institute and traveled with the Knights back to London where she met with Wynn and was brought into the fold.

Here's where we get into the part where Brooke talks shit because she doesn't reaaaally know where the Knights have offices. I'm assuming that London HQ would service all of Great Britain perhaps? So for the sake of explaining where Gwen has been for the last few years, she might have been sent back to Cardiff to work as the Knights liaison to the Police in Wales. A contact point for Teams who have been dispatched to check in with, to gain information about contacts, more details about cases, somebody who reports concerning activity to Wynn when she feels something is out of the depths of the local authorities. Perhaps a Freelancer Knight?!

Anyway! As for what brings her back to London? She could easily be recalled or even requests to be brought back out of sheer... boredom on her part? After the life she led with Torchwood, Gwen needs to be more than a liaison, she'd need to be out in the thick of things.

Chosen Canon Point: Season 2, Episode 3: To The Last Man. Basically I'm being nice and bringing her in ore 'All my friends are dead'

Personality and Psychology: Gwen has a very set idea of right and wrong and her stubborn nature makes it all but impossible to change her way of thinking. Fiercely loyal, there is nothing she wouldn't do for the ones she loves, regardless of the sometimes catastrophic consequences (almost destroying the world just so she could bring her boyfriend Rhys back from the dead a prime example of this. TW: End Of Days.) She is the woman you want on your side but perhaps not somebody you can trust to remain level-headed and logical. She will choose to do what she thinks is right rather than consider the greater good, an endearing yet dangerous way to be given her line of work.

Getting involved with Torchwood may have opened her eyes to the possibilities of the universe, but has also left her feeling as though she doesn't completely belong anywhere. She is still in many ways clinging to the life she has always known but without the bliss of ignorance she can no longer relate to people the way she used to. She grew distant from her boyfriend, barely listening when he talked about the average trials and tribulations of his daily life and withdrew from the people she associated with B.T (Before Torchwood). Perhaps that was why she tried so hard to focus on the human element of everything she dealt with (Most evident in TW: First Day). She was trying to force her two worlds to coexist with each other and try as she might, it was like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

She has however learned a lot of things about herself, and not all of it has been things she likes. She considered herself to be an honest and good person until coming to Torchwood but has been on a gradual slide into moral ambiguity. Forced to conceal the truth from her friends and family, avoidance has turned into deceit and as the lies pile up, she finds it easier to do other things she never thought herself capable of, from cutting ties with her former best mate and beat partner Andy, to cheating on her long-term boyfriend Rhys (TW: Cyberwoman, Countrycide.) Though Jack insists she needs to keep her old life in order to retain the very thing that makes her special, it seemed that in doing so she was failing at both.

It's during Season Two that we see Gwen begin to draw a line when it comes to protecting the secrets of Torchwood and trying to be true to herself, enabling her to get back to being more of the person she believed she was and should be, somebody who doesn't lie and cheat. When her work and home life collide (TW: Meat), Gwen is faced with a difficult and potentially life changing decision. She forces Jack to choose between having her in the team her way (By allowing Rhys to know the truth) or not at all. This is perhaps the first step towards Gwen regaining control of a life that started to spin out of control the day she first crossed paths with Jack Harkness.

This control is not so easily regained and doesn't always work to Gwen's advantage. Even with Rhys knowing the truth of the life Gwen leads, she continues to try and force her two worlds to coexist, seen most notably when she insists on marrying Rhys despite the fact that she has been impregnated by an Alien (TW: Something Borrowed). This is just another example of Gwen's stubborn nature and what can only be described as the square peg in a round hole syndrome. Gwen wants it all even if it's irrational and dangerous but also isn't willing to compromise. This shows on one hand, how selfish she can be and yet on the other hand, how selfless she is because she wants to do this for Rhys, because he has always put up with her screwing things up and she feels as if she owes him.

Gwen is the sort of person who doesn't know how to leave well enough alone. Her curious mind was what made her an excellent cop and also led her to become a member of Torchwood but tied in with her stubborn nature can make her almost impossible to deal with. Once she has an idea in her head, you cannot sway her from her path no matter how illogical it may be. (TW: Everything Changes, Random Shoes, Adrift.)

Though you wouldn't go so far as to call her a sarcastic bitch, Gwen's combined quick wit and ability to state the obvious can leave you unsure of where you stand with her. You know she likes you or at least feels comfortable in your presence when she is happy to take the piss out of you. She will call you out on the embarrassing moments you are trying to pretend aren't real, but will do it with a wink and a smile. If you rub her the wrong way she isn't one to bite her tongue, preferring to call people out rather than let anything slide. ( As evident by her often antagonistic relationship with Owen - TW: Day One, Countrycide, Combat.)

Canon Relationships: Not entirely relevant to Knights of Legend seeing as Gwen will not retain all these memories but it does show more about her personality so, adding it here.

As the newest member of Torchwood, it has taken Gwen time to get closer to some of her colleagues than others. Jack's sudden and unexpected departure (TW: End of Days) for three months saw a number of things change within the dynamics of the team. Gwen took on a leadership role within Torchwood which seemed to bring the remaining members closer together but also drove something of a wedge between her and Jack.

Owen was the first she formed any form of real bond with (outside of Jack) and what started as an antagonistic relationship (TW: Day One.) developed into something more after a life and death situation ended in a kiss (TW: Cyberwoman, Countrycide.). Though Gwen was involved with somebody else, she found that Owen offered her not only an escape, but was somebody who actually understood what she went through with her job. Things ended romantically between them long ago and the relationship became rather frosty as a result (TW: Combat.). It took Gwen a long time to be able to forgive herself for cheating on Rhys and her relationship with Owen only improves as she comes to term with what happened. It perhaps took losing Owen for Gwen to realise how much she still cared for him, even if it's not in a romantic sense.

Though not immediately apparent, Gwen and Ianto are very similar, especially when it comes to those they love. Both have shown that they can be reckless and selfish in order to protect what matters to them and though far from close in the early days, Gwen can strongly empathise with what Ianto goes through. (TW: Cyberwoman - Ianto, End of Days - Gwen.) It takes Jack leaving for a bond to truly form between the two, perhaps because they both feel abandoned by Jack, even if neither openly discuss how or why. In those three months Jack is gone, Ianto goes from being the Torchwood Coffee Boy to becoming a full fledged member of the team. We see a rapport has been built between Gwen and Ianto and they they may not be the best of friends by any means, they have come along way from the two people that barely talked at the beginning of the series.

Her relationship with Tosh is definitely the weakest out of those in the Torchwood team. Gwen and Tosh are so completely different that its hard for them to connect. While Gwen will often wear her heart on her sleeve, Tosh's reserved nature is in stark contradiction to everything Gwen is. She has tried to understand the girl, has even tried to reach out in her own way (TW: Greeks Bearing Gifts & Something Borrowed) but they have never completely warmed to each other.

Jack is almost symbolic of the struggle Gwen faces in life. He is the man who opened her eyes to the world yet the choices he makes within Torchwood leave her torn between loving and loathing him. Jack has shown that he will risk the lives of a few to save the masses and though she can almost admire him, she finds herself disgusted at the same time. (TW: Small Worlds, End of Days, Adrift.) Her instinct is to always be loyal to him and yet her head, and even heart tells her that he is wrong. It took almost losing him for good for her to realise that no matter what he does, a life without Jack in it, is no life at all.

The trust has been damaged between them after he left (TW: End of Days) and Gwen continues to feel as though Jack will leave her again as soon as things get tough, or when it suits him. She loves Jack, even the creator Russell T. Davies confirms that but a part of her knows that being with Jack wouldn't be a good thing because he cannot die, he does not age and he will let her down. Loving Jack and being with Jack are two very different things. She looks to Jack to tell her that he wants her that way, even at times tries to push him to say as much; (TW: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang & Something Borrowed.) but for whatever reason, Jack continues to push her to Rhys and Gwen will not put herself out there for fear of his rejection. There are however numerous times, even on her wedding day when you get the impression that Jack need only say the word, and she would choose him.

Perhaps it is this relationship with Jack that sees Gwen engaged to Rhys, the boyfriend she has had since College. There's no doubting that Gwen loves Rhys but as she herself says (TW: Adam), it's not in the same way that she loves Jack. Their relationship went through an extremely rocky period throughout Season 1 and part of Season 2 when Gwen was trying to keep Torchwood a secret from him. Their worlds collided (TW: Meat) and Rhys is now very much aware of the life that Gwen leads and though in some ways this does strengthen the relationship between them, they are not perfect by any means.

Rhys is the person who keeps Gwen grounded. She relies on him to always be there, to put up with her shit and she knows that he loves her. At the same time, Gwen's reason for agreeing to marry Rhys when probed by Jack? Who else would have me? (TW: Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang.) This in and of itself raises a lot of questions in relation to whether Rhys is the one that Gwen is meant to be with, or whether she stays with him because he is safe and because she doesn't want to be alone.

Memories Retained or Lost:

For the most part, Gwen recalls her experiences more than she does the people from her previous life. She has no memory of Rhys what-so-ever, despite recalling the relationship more as something of her past.

Tosh, Ianto and Owen are remembered on a vague level, she does remember them but not the depth of their relationships. More that these were people she worked with and what job they did but thats it.

The one person she does remember quite clearly is Jack. Coming through the veil may have dulled the strength of her connection to him but she'd know his face if he were ever to show up and she'd not in her gut that she'd follow him anywhere. She'll even know that there are times when she really shouldn't.

The major difference between life here and life home, she will no longer be encouraged or even forced to try and make the two sides of her life coexist. In forgetting Rhys, she has nothing outside of the Knights to try and hold on to and will be able to develop in her own right without that impeding her growth as a person.

Powers and Abilities:

Nothing of a supernatural variety but Gwen was a police officer for a number of years and then with Torchwood so she'd be considered a skilled investigator with the ability to think outside the box.

Roleplay Samples

Link to a sample of your character in action:
"Who the bloody hell signed me up for this rubbish?"

Link to a sample of your prose writing style:

“Oh yeah that's just great that is. Mock the woman whose been shot.” She grunted as she tried to shift, pain radiating from her abdomen through the rest of her body and she slammed a clenched fist against the wall that kept her from collapsing completely, the sudden pain that shot up her arm distracting her momentarily from the rest of it. Shame it was only short lived.

“You're a real charmer you are.” So ok, it wasn't Owen but jesus if he didn't have the same twisted sense of humour as her Torchwood Doctor. Better looking mind, not that she'd really noticed given the blood that was steadily spreading across her shirt and not that she'd ever be stupid enough to tell him that. If he was half as arrogant as Owen the Underworld wouldn't be able to take his swollen head.

“I can manage.” Her look managing to be not quite as stern as his was, not that she could really be blamed. It was hard to look all serious when breathing was hard enough to grasp right now. She tried to get her legs underneath her body, to get enough strength to push herself up but fell back to the ground, an involuntary cry escaping before she could clench her teeth together once more in an attempt to hide it.

There was a long moment while she just sat there, eyes closed and trying to breathe, albeit with great difficulty. Finally she opened one eye and stared at the hardened look on his face.

“OK. If you could just, help me up maybe?”

The Whole thread if you really want the epic TLDR.

Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession):

Beretta 92F (9mm autoloader) <-- Would have come with her through the veil.

Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights? Have you seen Torchwood? LMAO. No but srsly. Gwen has an overwhelming desire to help people, make a difference and after her time with Torchwood, she's not suited for a life of normality. Wynn would probably see in her, much of what Jack did. Somebody who will think with her heart before her mind, which while dangerous in some regards, is also important in their line of work.

Do you have a preference for which member of the Knights your character is squired to? Nada. Mainly cause I'd like to skip the squiring for Gwen based on post veil history. That said, I would ideally like to know who she would have been squired to when she did it, purely for the sake of some hand-waved CR :D No preference for who though.

Talents
empathy [+2]
The Dedicated hero has a knack for being sensitive to the feelings and thoughts of others without having those feelings and thoughts communicated in any objectively explicit manner. This innate talent provides a bonus on checks involving interaction skills (Bluff, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Perform, and Sense Motive), provided the hero spends at least 1 minute observing his or her target prior to making the skill check. The bonus is equal to the hero’s Dedicated level.

enhanced profile
At 5th level, the Profiler improves his ability to create a general psychological profile of a criminal. He does so by attempting a Knowledge (behavioral sciences) check with a variable DC (see below). If this check is successful, the Profiler can better determine the suspect’s background, as represented by her class level. Rather than produce a specific number, this allows the Profiler to determine the suspect’s level within a certain range. The ranges are: 1st–3rd level, 4th–6th level, 7th–10th level, 11th–14th level, and 15th– 20th level.

The DC for the Knowledge (behavioral sciences) check is 15 + the suspect’s character level. The DC is increased by 5 if the suspect has levels of any advanced class, and is lowered by 5 if the suspect is an ordinary character. If the check is successful, the GM should provide reliable information. If the check fails, the GM should provide inaccurate information—a little too low if the suspect is an ordinary character, and a little too high if the suspect is a heroic character.

profile
A Profiler knows how to create a profile of a criminal. By making a Gather Information check (DC 15) related to a crime, the Profiler compiles a rough mental picture of the suspect. This mental picture provides a physical description, including distinguishing marks and visible mannerisms. Success makes the profile accurate, at least concerning a particular suspect as seen by witnesses. However, the Profiler has no way to be certain that the criminal didn’t wear a disguise or otherwise mask her identity.

The Profiler can expand the profile by making an Investigate check (DC 15) involving the crime scene or other evidence linked to the suspect. If successful, the Profiler combines the information gathered with forensic evidence to develop a profile of the suspect’s method of operation. This provides a +2 circumstance bonus on any skill checks made to uncover additional evidence or otherwise locate the suspect—the Profiler develops a sense of the suspect’s goals and where he or she might strike next.

fast talk [+2]
The Charismatic hero has a way with words when attempting to con and deceive. With this talent, he or she applies his or her Charismatic level as a competence bonus on any Bluff, Diplomacy, or Gamble checks the hero makes while attempting to lie, cheat, or otherwise bend the truth.

read target
At 2nd level, the Profiler gains the ability to quickly gain deep insight into the people he meets. While talking directly with a person, the Profiler may spend 1 action point and attempt a Sense Motive check (opposed by the target’s Bluff) to “read” the target’s general nature.

If the Profiler’s check is successful, he gains a +1 insight bonus on all Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Sense Motive checks against the target.

At 6th level, the Profiler’s insight bonus against targets he successfully reads increases to +2.

At 8th level, the Profiler’s insight bonus against targets he successfully reads increases to +4.

At 10th level, the Profiler may spend 1 action point to increase the insight bonus to +6.

identify motive
At 4th level, the Profiler can use a crime scene (or evidence from a crime scene) to determine the perpetrator’s state of mind at the time she committed the crime. If the perpetrator attempted to hide the nature of her crime (such as making a premeditated murder look like a burglary gone awry), the Profiler must make a Sense Motive check opposed by the perpetrator’s Bluff check. If the crime was committed by more than one perpetrator and the Profiler does not know this fact, the Bluff check receives a +5 bonus.

Success allows the Profiler to understand the perpetrator’s emotional state at the time of the crime, and reveals how many perpetrators were involved.
